Officially Designated Important Cultural Asset: Murakamike

NANTO City

The height of pride out of all of the folk houses of Gokayama, Murakamike shows off the rustic grit and power of the district's commercial farms with its rope-bound Gassho straw roof, its thick, heavy timber, and its strong wooden walls. Of all the many remains left from the period of transition from the Samurai lodgings of the Warring States period to the traditional residential architectural style, Murakamike is said to be unprecedented in all of Japan.
