E-bike Tour in Shirakawa-go

Take a Cycle Tour and Discover
Shirakawa-Go’s Hidden Sights!

It was Arihara-san from Shirakawa-go Activity Center o8—based in Shirakawago and offering various activities such as SUP and packrafting—who showed me gassho-zukuri aren’t the only charm Shirakawa-go has to offer. I immediately hopped on an e-bike and set off on a cycle tour to explore the hills of Shirakawa-go.

My first stop was the Ogi-machi Castle Ruin Observation Area, where I took a commemorative photo of the idyllic Shirakawa-go gassho-zukuri village below me. As I continued up and down the undulating mountain trail, I arrived at Kodaki, one of the Three Amou Waterfalls. It has a drop of 10m, and the sight of freshwater fish like char swimming about in the plentiful water from the snowmelt warmed my heart. After a few sharp turns on my e-bike, a roar filled the air, and I was soon face-to-face with the powerful 20m Nakadaki Falls. Its breathtaking beauty left me speechless.

Cycling through the woods in the fresh mountain air is an unbeatable way to escape the rush of daily life and refresh the mind and body. The special route on the guided tour was jam-packed with discovery and adventure.

※Personal vehicles are prohibited from entering the Ogi-machi Castle Ruin Observation Area.

On regular sightseeing tours, most people only walk through the gassho-zukuri village. However, on this tour you can also explore the area’s natural beauty.

Our guide Arihara-san explained that, thanks to the wisdom of our ancestors, Shirakawa’s gassho-zukuri houses were all built in the same direction to protect them from the harsh elements.

With the e-bike, even Shirakawa-Go’s hilly terrain felt effortless!

On a cycling tour, even waterfalls that are hard to see by car can be enjoyed up close. Everywhere you look is picturesque! I took so many photos.

Trees grow thick around the waterfall and look especially beautiful in fall as the leaves change color!
