Norikura Kogen
Guided Trekking Tours

Trek the Norikura
Highlands, one of
Shinshu’s Hidden Gems!

The stunning Norikura Highlands, often called a “paradise in the sky,” spread out along the eastern foothills of Mt. Norikura at an elevation of 3,026 meters. Green meadows swaying in the breeze, Japanese white birch trees, and Mt. Norikura against the blue sky in the distance create a picturesque scene. The gentle rolling terrain is also ideal for trekking, allowing visitors to soak in nature and enjoy the view at their leisure. My first stop was Ichinose Meadow. Maime Pond is a perfect photo spot on sunny days since Mt. Norikura reflects beautifully on its surface! Along the way, I observed seasonal plants and birds and enjoyed coffee brewed by my guide. Being out in Mother Nature made it taste even better.

Next, we headed to Zengoro Falls. The negative ions feel wonderful in summer, and in winter the blue of the frozen waterfall is a popular attraction. Even from the viewing platform, I felt the spray on my face and experienced the power of nature up close.

There are plenty of other trekking highlights along the Norikura Highlands, such as the serene Ushidome Pond and the sweetly scented shirabiso (Abies veitchii) forests. The air itself pulsed with life, and with each deep breath refreshed my mind and body.

There are grasslands and incredible mountains as far as the eye can see. Such an idyllic scene will heal anyone’s heart.

Located 1490 meters above sea level, Maimenoike is a quiet pond surrounded by conifers.

As our guide taught us about all about different plants, I felt a new spark of curiosity.

The amazing scenery makes a warm cup of coffee taste even better!

I had a great time walking through the forest, crossing bridges, and taking in the ever-changing scenery. It’s like a big adventure!

With a drop of 21.5 meters and a width of 8 meters, Zengoro Falls is an awe-inspiring sight up close!
