Shiko Munakata Memorial Building: Aizen En and Riugasai

Shiko Munakata Memorial Building: Aizen En and Riugasai

NANTO City

Towards the end of World War II, woodblock artist Shiko Munakata evacuated to Fukumitsu and created many fascinating works. At the center of the works on exhibit is Aizen En, or Garden of Passion, the title under which the memorial building was established in 1982. Facing Aizen En is Munakata's studio, Riugasai (Carp, Rain, Illustration, Purity), a work that was also found in his family home. With scenes of carp and catfish drawn on the door to an 8-tatami mat room and goddesses and Bodhisattvas adorning the lavatory, you can feel Shiko Munakata's presence everywhere.
