Yamaya Candy Factory
Candy-Making Workshop

Discover intricate craftsmanship
at the candy town of Matsumoto!

Yamaya Onamedokoro was first established in 1672 Tsunayoshi Tokugawa served as the 5th shogun. Here, traditional Japanese candy made primarily from rice syrup (a natural sweetener) is still handcrafted through methods passed down since ancient times. The region first became to make candy due to its abundant rice, plentiful spring water, and dry climate. In the Meiji Period, it boasted the highest candy production in the country with more than 20 shops at its peak. However, now only three remain. To preserve this local candy culture, 14th-generation owner Yoshihisa Ota has started a Temari Candy-Making Experience Program.

First, vivid blue and red candy is stretched into long, thin strands. Then, these strands are attached to a milky white candy base and stretched further. However, it’s a challenge to keep the thickness uniform! You have to work quickly, or the candy will harden. The artisan’s skills were truly a sight to behold.

The candy rods are next cut and pressed in a tool called a kyudanki. As the lid of the tool slides back and forth, it creates adorable pink and blue-striped round temari candies! As I popped a fresh, warm candy in my mouth, the mellow sweetness instantly put a smile on my face.

The 14th-generation owner’s step-by-step instruction made the candy-making process easy and fun.. Once finished, I couldn’t help but exclaim ‘So cute!’ and admire my own handiwork.

The candy is slowly and carefully stretched to achieve an even thickness.

By sliding a heavy lid back and forth, candy rods are formed into little round balls.

Thanks to this workshop, I fulfilled my childhood dream of making a lollipop! I couldn’t ask for more!

I bought ita-ame, a crunchy candy made by boiling peanuts and rice syrup on high heat, as a souvenir!

The shop’s historic, retro storefront is also a registered Matsumoto City Modern Heritage Site.
