Zenoji Zazen Experience
Experience zazen to self-reflect and
reset both the mind and body.
The historic Higashiyama Temple Area stretches across the easter hills of Takayama City. Zennoji is one such temple which was reestablished in its current location in 1626 after several transitions. Known for its zazen meditation experience classes, the Zazen Hall is suffused in a tranquility which blocks out outside noise and allows visitors to quiet their hearts in deep silence.
After receiving guidance from the 12th head priest on the importance of proper posture, breathing, and etiquette, I tried zazen for myself. By lowering both knees to the ground and supporting my body on three separate points, I could breathe easier and my mind gradually started to clear! As I focused on the tanden (the point below the navel), I could feel the restlessness in my mind flow outward. I also received a tap of the kyousaku (encouragement stick) which alerted me to any mental shifts. I felt a true sense of purification.
Zazen proved to be an invaluable experience and important reminder that we should all take time to cleanse the mind and look within ourselves.
Zazen is a Buddhist practice which encourages one to sit with correct posture and cultivate mental focus. Here at Zennoji, you can experience this in an authentic zazen hall.
The head priest explained that correct posture and breathing technique while in the zazen position will balance the mind and body.
Slowly inhaling and exhaling through deep Tanden Breathing is said to improve blood circulation throughout the whole body.
It is a valuable opportunity to cultivate mental focus and look inward.
They say zazen can increase serotonin levels in the brain and improve stress tolerance.
The 40-minute zazen session was over in the blink of an eye, and both my heart and mind felt light as a feather!
